Volunteer Opportunities

Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley could not operate without the generous support of volunteers. But in addition to helping Safe Shelter clients, volunteers gain as much as they give. The intangible returns from service to others are what draw our volunteers to us.

Volunteer positions include:

SHELTER

Supervise Play Activities
Sunday, 6:00-8:00p
Supervise children during Shelter House Meeting

Children's Support Group
Monday, 6:00-8:00p
Assist Children's Advocate with Children's Support Group, which runs concurrently with Women's Support Group

Mentoring Children and/or Offering Moms Respite Time
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
(Flexible days/hours)
Offer one-on-one mentoring time with children. Supervise children's play activities while Mom rests, meets with Advocate/Case Manager, makes phone calls, etc. (Moms will be on site.)

Co-facilitate House Meeting
Sunday, 6:00-8:00p
Assist Shelter Night Manager in conducting house meeting to plan meals, divide chores, and deal with any issues related to communal living.

Assist with Support Group
Monday, 6:00-8:00p
Assist Shelter Night Manager in conducting Women's Support Group.

Answer phones, greet clients, schedule appointments, triage community calls.

Legal Advocacy

Protection Order Clinic (Court House in Longmont)

Tuesday, 2:00-4:00p & on-call as needed
Assist Legal Advocate in helping individuals to fill out paperwork to obtain protection orders, attend hearings with clients, etc.

TERA
TERA (Teens Ending Relationship Abuse) is a volunteer program for teens and young adults that provides teens with the training and opportunity to educate their peers in the community and schools about the dynamics of interpersonal violence on all levels but specifically dating abuse, and to heighten awareness and promote prevention.

TERA Administrative Support
Monday - Friday, 8:00a-5p
(Flexible days and times: This could all be during the day or early evening. Our TERA advocate sometimes stays late for appointments.)
Type letters and other communication to peer educators, record program statistics (figure percentages from presenation evaluations), help with mailings, and make phone calls.

TERA Mentoring
Approximately 8-10 hours per month, which includes 2 hours for monthly evening meetings and an additional 8-10 hours at schools during the day for presentations. Also, 2 hours of additional training in mentoring. There may be additional time spent in meetings with peer educators.
