Volunteer training is mandatory for all perspective volunteers. The training consists of two parts – interactive classroom training and “hands-on” training. Classroom training (approximately 36 hours) covers a broad range of domestic violence related issues. Further training in the specific area in which the volunteer will be working is required to gain a stronger understanding. Hands-on training which takes 4 – 8 hours, is a time when the volunteer works in her or his position with supportive supervision.

Topics covered in the classroom training are:

• Dynamics of Domestic Violence

• Opression/Priviledge/Hierarchy/Patriarchy & the History of Communities of Color in the Movement

• Client-Centered Advocacy/Male Victims
